Abraham's seed--never in bondage (Egypt and Babylon and Rome forgotten in their self-conceit)--and Thou sayest, made free? Yes, He says, made free. The sinner is a slave. You, if you yet know not the truth--if you have not experienced the emancipation of Jesus Christ--are a slave, however free. You cannot will, of yourself, not to touch again the accursed thing. That hasty temper, that angry feeling, that hot revenge, that sinful passion, that maddening drink, that cherished vile affection--are you its master, tell me, or its slave? When you do the thing your conscience condemns, when you leave undone the thing which duty thunders in your ear ought to be done and that instantly--which are you? master--or slave? Shall it be always thus? Shall we live thus, and die? or only cease to sin when disease palsies or tortures, and the appetite for sinning is dead within? and shall we then, with a few half-meant, half-unmeant prayers, prayers against sins which we did and cannot do, prayers for pardon and grace which we refused while we could sin, hope to pass into the eternal presence, and to stand acquitted before the great white throne? Why will ye die? The Example, the Master, is the Giver, too, of Freedom. The Son can make you free. He, sought this night with simple earnest entreaty, can take out of your heart the slave's aversion, the slave's cringing, the slave's grovelling thraldom--by breathing into you the blessed thought, If any man thirst--if any man sin--whosoever will--let him come--let him drink--let him live!
